Competition Rules

Rules For Entering Club Competitions

It is important that all competition entries conform to the following rules:

To enter a competition a member must have paid their subscription fees!

These are the Definitions of the Competitions this season.
Each judge will get a copy as a guide line for the competition they are judging.

  • Open - Any subject. The Image may be monochrome, colour, or mixed.

  • Open Black and White - Any subject. The image must have no colour, but may be monochrome and have a single colour tint eg: sepia or cyan.

  • Open Colour - Any subject, but the image must have 2 or more colours.

  • Macro/Close Up - Any subject, but the image must be taken within 3 feet from the subject to the lens. Images taken with a long or zoom lens that makes the image appear close will not be accepted. This will be difficult for the competition secretary to manage, so the onus is on the author not to cheat.

  • People - The image must have a person or persons being the main subject. Portraiture and Group shots are OK.

  • Creative - Difficult to define. A picture that is outside what may be considered the norm. A picture where the photographer has gone the extra mile. The picture must be your own work, and not a snap of other peoples artwork.

  • Landscape - Some form of land must be in the image. Seascapes will be accepted if they also show land.

  • Weather - The image must show the natural elements of weather. For example: storms, flooding, parched ground, extreme wind, trees blown across roads, rough seas, snow, hail, frost. A picture of somebody sunbathing, walking in the rain, or playing in snow is not showing the elements of weather.

Projected Images - Digital Images or 35mm Slides

The maximum number of projected entries per competition is two. This can be two Digital Images, or two 35mm Slides, or one slide and one digital image. Projected images can be either colour or black and white.

Images can be in landscape or portrait format.  Portraits however, must be vertical.

Images will only be accepted on a pen-stick on the specified night. Exceptions for this will at the discretion of Alan Gaines, and will only be considered for medical, holiday, or work reasons. Even in these circumstances they must arrive no later than Friday the same week (i.e. two days after the specific Wednesday submission date).

Any images not complying with the above rules will be rejected.

 35mm Slides

Slides must be securely mounted in 2 x 2 inch mounts (no glass) with the title and your membership number written on the mount with a marker pen. No sticky pieces of paper please!

With the picture the right way up a red adhesive circle should be placed in the bottom lefthand corner, to indicate the way the slide is to be viewed. Slides should be clean and dust-free. Slides will be scanned and entered as a digital image. There is no loss of quality. Often, the scanned image is better than the original slide!

Any images not complying with the above rules will be rejected.

Prints

The maximum number of print entries per competition is three. These can be colour, or black and white, or mixed. All prints must be mounted.

The minimum size for print images is 18cm x 13cm excluding the mount. The maximum size is 50cm x 40cm including the mount. Prints must be marked in the back with the title, your LLPS membership number, and your choice letter.

These are:  A = your first choice print, B = your second choice, and C = your third choice. So if you call one of your images Black Steam Engine and it is your second choice, then it should be labelled as below:

Black Steam Engine-LLPS99-B

If on an occasion the print entry is over subscribed for the judge, all the C choice images will be removed from the competition.

The only information required on your prints is the title, your LLPS membership number, and your choice letter. This should be positioned in the top centre on the reverse of the print. Under no circumstances should there be any indication of your identity. The backing board of the mount should be firmly affixed and the label containing the required information should also be firmly fixed to it.

Trade processed prints may be so noted on the rear of the mount for the correct assessment of the judge, both for black and white and colour.

Any images not complying with the above rules will be rejected.

We have an Intermediate section for competition entries.  We have noticed that new members can be intimidated when they enter their pictures against 'The Big Boys' in the club, and therefore think they will be rubbished by the judge (this wouldn't happen - judges make constructive criticism designed to help and encourage members.)

  • New members, or indeed any club member, can join the intermediate group by informing the Competition Secretary.
  • Existing members of the advanced group who wish to join the intermediate group will have their past results discussed with the competition secretary who will then decide if that member may join the intermediate section.
  • The competition secretary will identify the intermediate group images when preparing the entry list for the judge.
  • The judge will take note of this, and make allowances for the member’s lack of experience.  At the end of the season, the Intermediate member with the most points will be awarded a trophy.
  • Members can leave the Intermediate group and join 'The Big Boys' whenever they wish.
  • If an intermediate member wins 1st place (DPI or print) in more than three competitions in any one season they must move to the advanced group the following season.
  • No Intermediate member can win the overall image of any competition as this group is judged separately.
